Veterinary Assistant

Do you love to work with animals? Sugar Mill Veterinary Center is looking for a compassionate, experienced Veterinary Assistant to assist our veterinary team by providing assistance with nursing and other duties. We are looking for someone with at least 2 years of experience and the desire to learn on the job. The Veterinary Assistant will educate clients on pet health, ensure the safety and comfort of patients, and oversee continuity of care. You will collaborate with other veterinary team members to create a positive, comfortable environment for patients. You will provide professional, efficient service at all times.
To ensure success you need to love animals, and have the ability to optimize their comfort during treatment and hospitalization. Preferred candidates are dexterous, knowledgeable, and caring.

Veterinary Assistant Responsibilities:
- Ensuring treatment areas, examination rooms, hospital areas, cages and laboratories are clean and organized.
- Sterilizing equipment.
- Ensuring clients and pets are comfortable in waiting area.
- Providing empathetic care for hospitalized patients, and keeping patients and their cages clean.
- Restraining irritable, angry patients appropriately and safely where required.
- Assisting with administering medication, drawing blood and cleaning patients’ teeth.
- Performing diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests.
- Liaising with veterinarians and veterinary technicians to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Complying with hospital standards, rules, regulations and policies.
- Maintaining medical records.
Veterinary Assistant Requirements:
- High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
- AVMA-approved veterinary assistant certification is advantageous.
- Affinity for animals.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong people skills.
- Outstanding organizational skills.
- Physically strong and dexterous. Able to lift 40lbs and able to stand for extended periods.
- Available to work weekends and holidays.
Pet Groomer
Sugar Mill Vet Center is looking for a friendly Pet Groomer to perform all grooming-related duties necessary to ensure that pets are neat, clean, and look their best. The Pet Groomer’s responsibilities include bathing animals of various sizes and temperaments, trimming, clipping, or shaving hair/fur, and removing matted hair. You should also be able to ensure that grooming tools and equipment are in good working condition.
You will work closely with our veterinary staff to pick up on any potential illnesses or other health concerns and relay those to our veterinary team, as well as the pet’s owner.
You should be great with animals and people, listening to the owners’ requests for how they want their pet to look, and keeping the animals calm in what can be a stressful situation.
You should be able to lift up to 40lbs and stand for long periods of time when needed. Must have transportation availability. Be punctual and a team player.

Pet Groomer Responsibilities:
- Dematting and detangling hair as required.
- Bathing, conditioning, and drying pets.
- Trimming pets’ nails, brushing their teeth, and cleaning their ears.
- Grooming and styling pets according to pet owners’ instructions or standard grooming styles. Must be familiar with different breeds hair cuts etc.
- Accommodating special requests that pet owners may have.
- Must know how to work with older dogs and cats, as well as puppies and kittens.
- Identifying health issues in pets, such as ear infections, skin conditions, or tooth decay, and informing pet owners of these observations.
- Ensuring that all pets are safe during the grooming process.
- Routinely cleaning work areas.
- Recommending suitable products to pet owners.
Pet Groomer Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certification through an accredited program is an advantage.
- Proven professional grooming experience is an advantage.
- Sound understanding of animal behavior.
- The ability to stand for long periods of time.
- The ability to treat all animals with compassion.
- The ability to lift heavy pets and equipment up to 40 lbs.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
